The ‘Bernie’ is an annual award that recognises the contribution of one of our members for their outstanding contribution to the club. This award recognises our volunteers, which is extremely important as our club, and the sport at a state level only functions due to work of the volunteers that are involved.

The award is peer nominated, with any member of the club able to nominate any other member at any point throughout the year. The nominations are then reviewed by the committee and a vote held to determine the winner. This year we received three nominations for this award, here are our nominees for 2022-23.

Frank Lupis

Frank is a dual sponsor of the club, and has a crucial role in supporting the Thursday Night In-House competition to ensure this runs smoothly and there’s a steady stream of volunteers for supper. Frank manages the social side of the event and his support is invaluable.

Frank has been a hard working member of Blue Gum Squash Club for many years. He is an active committee member he has been heavily involved with fund raising events for the club during this year.

Steven Jones

Steven does an outstanding job as President. He helps out at juniors, organises Thursday night, keeps all the notices up to date, leads the committee, sorts the containers for change and a heap of other things. He continues to promote change at the club and has been the driving force behind this for the past few years.

Yvette Clement

Yvette has become a highly valued member of the club. She originally volunteered at our junior programme, managing the catering, logistics on the day, and 35 plus kids doing there thing.

In the past 12 months Yvette has started to play as well as support. She has been active on the tournament scene, supported junior events, and has joined the Squash WA board, which is fantastic for Yvette and our club. As part of her role with the board, Yvette managed the Country Week event this year, which had record numbers.

Yvette is active at all Squash WA events and is a great advocate for squash, juniors, the club. She is welcoming, and an excellent advocate for the sport!

Yvette has service in her veins. She is always on hand to help and has been an outstanding support to many in the club, and at the centre.

And the winner is:      YVETTE CLEMENT
